Company in the Spotlight: Haitjema

To realize all the goals of the PUSH-IT project, several companies are involved, from drilling the actual wells to the digital modelling of the system. In this series, we want to highlight some of those companies. Who are they? How do they contribute to the PUSH-IT project? What are their future plans In this editionHaitjema groundwater technologies.

What type of company is Haitjema?

We are a drilling company, specialized in ATES (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage), Wells for the production of drinking water and Wells for production sites, such as  Food industry, Paper industry, Beer companies and many others. We have been drilling since 1900 and are celebrating our 126 years anniversay! We are proud to say that we are the largest independent Dutch drilling company with 110 employees. Our goal is to keep providing our business partners with the best possible and sustainable solutions in Groundwater and related Technologies.

What does Haitjema do in the PUSH-IT project?

Haitjema is involved in the design and  future realization of the Mid- and High-temperature storage Wells that are situated approximately 280 metres below ground level in Delft.

What other interesting new project are planned for the future?

Luckily we have a lot of interesting projects for drinking water and energy storage. For instance the expansion of the ATES at the TU Delft Campus.

What lessons has Haitjema learned so far about drilling for ATES systems?

Our first ATES system was realized in 1984, so in more than fourty years we learned a lot. An important factor is our accurate sampling of the underground and precision in measurements and construction of the wells. Also cleaning the wells after they have been constructed is very important.

How could you put those lessons into practice?

We have already put a lot of the lessons learned into practice. For instance by developing cleaning methods and developing and building specialized equipment for these specific purposes.

How could you contribute to scale up UTES throughout the country or Europe?

We are contributing by our involvement in “BodemenergieNL”, “Bouwend Nederland” and our contributions to several TKI (Topconsortium knowledge and innovation) projects.
