Introducing Treasure

As Europe strives toward a climate-neutral future, the demand for efficient and scalable heating solutions is growing fast. One key technology leading the way is Thermal Energy Storage (TES)—and while the Push-It project is making great strides in this space, it’s far from alone. Across the continent, multiple research and demonstration projects are working in parallel to develop and deploy TES solutions tailored for local energy systems. Today, we’re highlighting one of those exciting initiatives: the Treasure Project.

The Treasure Project is focused on accelerating the adoption of Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) through large-scale demonstration, technical improvements, and broader public engagement.

Operating across seven sites in five countries—Poland, Germany, Austria, France, and Serbia—with partners from Denmark and Czechia, Treasure is a truly pan-European effort. Its mission is ambitious: to lower costs, streamline development timelines, and improve both the performance and public perception of PTES.

Key Goals of the Treasure Project:

  • Demonstrate PTES at scale at seven diverse locations.
  • Reduce time from planning to operation, making the technology faster to implement.
  • Develop Key Performance Indicators, refine components, and optimize building processes.
  • Enhance public and policymaker awareness and acceptance of PTES.

Tackling Common Challenges Together

Among the most pressing issues facing the Treasure team are the standardization of procedures and permits, financing hurdles, and lengthy project timelines. These challenges are familiar to many working in TES and underline the need for greater collaboration across projects.

“Collaboration is important to share experience, to work on common fields like standardisation and permitting, and to make dissemination more effective.”

By working alongside other initiatives like Push-It, the Treasure project is helping build a foundation for faster, more efficient, and widely accepted thermal storage solutions throughout Europe.
